Publications and how they work

What is a Publication?
Publications are Campaign channels that help administer Newsletter sign-up, consent status, anti-spam compliance and more. They are a unique concept to eFlyerMaker. In other words, it’s our way to make you fully compliant to laws without having to do much.
Publications are a form that your new subscribers have to fill so you obtain a double opt-in of their consent. If you’ve already read our glossary, you already know that a double opt-in is a method of gaining informed consent whereby the subscriber actively confirms their subscription by responding to an automatically generated message sent to the e-mail address.
Once the double opt-in is confirmed, you pretty much have the keys to your subscriber’s inbox until he revokes his consent. Use it wisely!
How does publications work?
Publications are masters of the eFlyerMaker universe, they control everything. As a matter of fact, without publications, you can’t send out anything. You need a publication in your campaign and a publication for your list.
Very important: If the publication of your campaign and the publication of your list don’t match, then the number of recipients will be wrong. When it’s time to click send final, you will find yourself confirming 0 recipients or a number of recipients that does not match the number of contacts in your list. The same thing will happen if you upload a list in eFlyerMaker but don't apply a publication to it.
As soon as a subscriber fill the sign-up form or is registered in eFlyerMaker by you, he is associated with a publication. That publication manages this subscriber’s consent and double opt-in. The publication will then manage what the subscriber receives or doesn’t receive. If you send a message with a publication of which the subscriber is not part of, he will not receive your message. If you look at any of your contact’s profile, you will see all the publications he is associated with.
When a subscriber hits unsubscribe
When a subscriber click the unsubscribe button, he is then offered two options:
- Unsubscribe from a publication
- Revoke his consent to receive electronic communications from you.
If he unsubscribe from a publication, you can still send him material, just not any campaign related to that specific publication.
If he revoke his consent, then it becomes illegal to send him anything unless he agrees to fill a new sign-up form.
So you see, as long as he just unsubscribed from a publication, you can just switch him to another publication and start sending again. Of course, you have to make sure the campaign is associated with the right publication.

Default Publication
As soon as you enter eFlyerMaker for the first time, there’s already a publication registered in the system called Newsletter. Unless you really need to create other publications, we suggest you stick to that one.
If you need to create your own, simply click on Create publication, enter the Name, select a list to match it with and a folder.
The best way to match list and publication
- Create your list and the fields of that list
When you reach step 3 of creating your list, exit by clicking on Lists and then Create publication
- You'll notice you can already match the publication with the list even though the list has no members yet.
Once the publication is created, click on Lists and Manage.
Click the View & Edit action button.
Click on Add Subscribers and proceed with your CSV file or manually
- Don’t forget to select the publication otherwise you’ll have to start all over again. Remember, your subscribers cannot receive your emails if they are not associated with a publication.
If you go back to your publication and click on the Sign-up form icon, you’ll notice that the questions of the form match the fields of your contact list. A sign that your publication and list are perfectly matched.
